Imagine being your own biggest fan – appreciating yourself for who you are & not being hard on yourself for everything that you’re not. I was on a track to find someone that loved me unconditionally when really the answer was in front of me the whole time… you can’t attract the love that you want until you love yourself.
Loving yourself is one of the most, if not the most, important thing standing between you and the reality that you want.
With culture dictating how you should look, what you should wear, the gadgets you should buy… it’s easy to become disillusioned and feel inadequate. Stop comparing yourself to others and be the best you that you can be. Judge yourself not on how you’re lined up against Joe Smith, but yourself yesterday.
You’ve got to remember to strive to be and be better (or at least as good) as you were yesterday. Set little goals and pat yourself on the back. For example, you wake up late. Don’t hate on yourself for hitting snooze three times, do better tomorrow. Then, when you get up on the first or second alarm, treat yourself to a specialty and a coffee (it doesn’t have to be that, but celebrate the small wins).
That’s where the importance of supporting yourself comes into play. The most important thing is to have a good base. Your meat-body needs to be functioning at optimal conditions for you to get the most out of yourself.
Below I have listed the 4 basic things you need to love and care for yourself. The following things aren’t secrets, they’re just things that take energy and commitment to keep your body it tip top shape.
- Water: This is by far one of the easiest things to neglect, but definitely keep hydrated. Your body is mostly made of water, it’s not surprise that it needs it to survive and be at it’s best.
- Body Movement (i.e. exercise): Also not a mind-blowing discovery. Your body feels better when you move it. As little as 10-20 minutes of walking a day can keep your mind clear, your body functioning well, and releases endorphins to make you feel good.
- Proper nutrition: Yum! Eat your fruits and veggies, gravitate towards whole foods, and lay off the processed products and sugars. Pay attention to how your body feels after you have eaten a certain thing and it will give you a good indication if it’s good or bad for your personal body.
- Sleep: Get your rest. Put your phone away at least an hour before bed, develop a routine to get relaxed and make your bed your happy place/sanctuary.
Once this solid foundation is developed, you can move on to incorporating more self-support by recognizing self-destructive thoughts and cutting them off. The more you let your mind run wild, the less control you have on your mind.
On a physiological level, the more times a neuron fires and you don’t correct it consciously, the more randomly and rapidly it’s going to fire until you take back control.
Start with recognizing negative thought patterns and clear your mind when you do become conscious of those thoughts. Once you get good at stopping your thoughts in their tracks, you can begin to replace those negative thoughts with positive thoughts.
Get up in the morning and stare in the mirror with no bias or judgement for 30 seconds. Every time your mind starts to wander or starts making judgements, bring it back to staring yourself in the eyes. Once 30 seconds has elapsed of grounding yourself through self-eye gazing, say 3 nice things about yourself.
Start by just constantly saying nice things to yourself all day long. Constantly reaffirm positive traits about yourself that you want to develop, compliment your own looks, and just generalize (i.e. “I am amazing.”) Simple steps like these will lead to a happier you.
You’re the only person that you truly have in this life. You’re the only person who can give you fulfillment and happiness. Self-love and self-care are so important because they’re the thing that can become a true constant (other than taxes and death of course *rolls eyes*) Start investing in yourself by loving and supporting yourself and you will almost immediately see the benefits and results.
